What the ServiceTag app can do today

The released feature set and product boundaries of ServiceTag, the separate open-source app for keeping your own equipment records on your phone.

Guide 3 of 4

A separate product. ServiceTag is the free, open-source, local-first app for keeping your own equipment records on your own Android phone: install it on the phone you already have, with no extra hardware, no signup and no account. ServiceTagPro, the platform this site is about, is a different, commercial product: organizations sign up for it and their staff use ServiceTagPro accounts. Using ServiceTag never requires it.

ServiceTag is an NFC-first, local-first equipment maintenance app. The NFC tag is the doorway; the equipment record and its long-lived service history are the product. It runs on your own Android phone with no account and no extra hardware. At the time of writing, the released version is ServiceTag 1.8.0; the repository on GitHub always has the latest.

Equipment records and NFC identity

  • Create equipment records and write, verify, rebind, replace or revoke their NFC tags.
  • Scan a tag straight into the right record.
  • Keep make, model, serial number, category, location, purchase and warranty details, with parent systems and child equipment.
  • Archive or retire equipment without erasing its history.
  • Keep tag identities through backup and restore, so the same tags keep working after a phone is replaced.

Service history and measurements

Each piece of equipment keeps an auditable record of maintenance, repairs, replacements and notes, with typed measurements and meter readings, materials used, quick actions, and photos, documents, receipts and manuals. History is kept as facts; what is due is worked out from them.

Schedules, seasons, condition and health

Maintenance can recur by elapsed time, by meter or usage, or by whichever comes first, in groups, with due and overdue states, snooze and postpone, and local reminders. Equipment can follow operating seasons, maintenance can pause during breaks without inventing completed work, and each item records whether it is operational, degraded or down, with a separate derived health view.

Supplies, components and documents

A catalog of supplies such as filters, batteries and belts records what each piece of equipment uses. Fitted components keep install dates, serial numbers and their replacement history. Photos, manuals, receipts and links can belong to equipment, supplies or components, and you can share files into the app from other apps.

Lending, replacement and handing over

Lend equipment with an optional due-back reminder, replace a piece of equipment with its successor while keeping both histories, and hand selected equipment, with its records, documents and tag identities, to another person as a Transfer Pack.

Backups, automation and languages

Backups are explicit, portable and keep stable identities. A deliberately narrow local Developer API and workstation tools allow automation without turning the app into a hosted service, and an optional Home Assistant link can start and end operating seasons. The interface is available in English and nine more languages.

What it deliberately is not

ServiceTag is not a required cloud service or account, an accounting or purchasing system, a live multi-user synchronization service, a telemetry platform or an autonomous AI system. Those boundaries keep it focused on durable equipment identity and trustworthy maintenance memory.

Sharing one record across a company, its technicians, its customers and the owners and managers of a property is what ServiceTagPro is for. Find your path
